Anthropogenic Global Warming: Man's Not At Fault, Ecologist Says

By    |   Wednesday, 29 October 2014 04:47 PM EDT

Despite a 97 percent consensus among scientists regarding the authenticity of anthropogenic global warming, or global warming caused by human beings, the topic remains an open question.

One "doubter" is Patrick Moore, a founding member of Greenpeace from 1971-86. The Canadian ecologist told The U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in February that there's "no scientific proof" of man-made global warming.

"There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth's atmosphere over the past 100 years. If there were such a proof it would be written down for all to see. No actual proof, as it is understood in science, exists."

Moore did draw a correlation that supported a "direct causal relationship between CO2 and global temperature" through the millennia, but concluded that since the planet has seen both higher temperatures and an ice age when CO2 emissions were 10 times higher than today, it  "fundamentally contradicts the certainty that human-caused CO2 emissions are the main cause of global warming."

Even if a warming Earth were true, it could be advantageous to humans and other forms of life, as "humans are a tropical species," Moore asserts.

Moore's views aren't shared by his former organization, which is among the majority in thinking that global warming is happening.

"Climate change is a reality," reads a message on Greenpeace.org. "Today, our world is hotter than it has been in two thousand years. By the end of the century, if current trends continue, the global temperature will likely climb higher than at any time in the past two million years."

In concert with scientists, Greenpeace cites burning increasing amounts of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas over the past century as reasons for a worsening situation, as the practice releases gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"If our greenhouse gas emissions aren't brought under control, the speed of climate change over the next hundred years will be faster than anything known since before the dawn of civilization," the Greenpeace said.
