Anemia is the most common blood condition in the U.S., with about 3.5 million reported cases. Those most at risk are women and people with chronic diseases.
Some forms of anemia are hereditary and infants can be affected from birth. Women are particularly susceptible to developing anemia during their childbearing years. This is because an iron-deficiency may result from blood-loss during menstruation and increased blood-supply demands during pregnancy.
Because anemia can be caused by poor diet and other medical conditions, seniors are also at a greater risk for developing anemia.
There are many different types of anemia and all have different causes. Iron- deficiency anemia is the most common. It is easily treatable with diet changes and iron supplements. Some forms of anemia are even considered normal — such as anemia developed during pregnancy.
However, if you believe you have anemia, you should consult your doctor immediately. Some types of anemia may present lifelong health problems.
