'Spartacus' Actor Andy Whitfield Dies of Cancer

Monday, 12 September 2011 12:02 PM EDT

Actor Andy Whitfield, who starred in the television show ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ died Sunday after a recurrence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 39-years-old.

People reports that the actor’s wife Vashti released a statement saying the “beautiful young warrior” died on a “sunny Sydney morning in the arms of his loving wife,” the Associated Press originally reported.

Whitfield was undergoing aggressive cancer treatment in Australia at the time of his death. The Wales native announced earlier this month that he would not be returning to the ‘Spartacus’ series.

“It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey,” the actor said in a previous statement.

Chris Albrecht, CEO and president of Starz, says that the network is mourning the loss of Whitfield.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Albrecht said in a statement. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life.”

“Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength, and grace,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and fans.”
