Do I Have Alzheimer's Disease? 6 Symptoms Men Should Never Ignore

By    |   Friday, 07 October 2016 11:22 AM EDT

Forgetfulness, confusion and a decline in thinking or reasoning skills are among the Alzheimer's disease symptoms that affect men. People might point out frequent mistakes you've been making lately. These could be temporary lapses or you could have concerns, in which case you should visit a doctor.

Here are six symptoms of Alzheimer's disease men should not ignore:

1. Memory loss: Loss of memory is what comes to mind for many people when thinking about Alzheimer's disease. Misplacing things once in a while is nothing to alarm yourself about. For example, you might misplace your car keys now and then. However, putting objects is unusual places, such as placing your keys in the refrigerator or other strange locations could indicate serious memory lapses.

If people mention that you frequently ask the same question again or again or you too often forget about appointments or conversations you had earlier, it could signal Alzheimer's, says the Mayo Clinic. Forgetting the names of family members or everyday items is another symptom.

2. Disorientation: Alzheimer's symptoms include confusing times and locations. Do you lose track of dates or seasons? Do you forget where you are or how you got there? Is it difficult to understand your surroundings at times?

3. Speaking difficulties: It's normal to lose yourself in a conversation and forget the correct word to use occasionally. Do you find yourself unable to use the right word to describe a simple object, such as a watch? Are you having trouble following a normal conversation or do you stop yourself in the middle of a conversation with no idea how to continue?

4. Forgetting familiar tasks: Are you finding it difficult to perform daily activities that were once routine? Do you have trouble driving to a familiar location? People with Alzheimer's can lose their ability to take the simple steps in cooking a basic meal or even understand how to play their favorite game, says Alzheimer's Association.

5. Reasoning: Have you noticed difficulty in dealing with numbers more than usual? You might have found balancing your checkbook and finances easy to do, but now it’s becoming more challenging. Alzheimer’s patients develop an inability to recognize numbers.

6. Behavioral changes: Have you given up on your favorite activities? The disease often causes people to withdraw from social interaction because of depression and anxiety. Alzheimer's disease symptoms for men may also include mood swings, distrust in others, changes in sleeping habits and irritability.
