Alzheimer's disease continues to grow as more cases are diagnosed every day. It is now the most common cause of dementia — 5.3 million Americans are afflicted with the disease as of 2010.
In many instances, the effects of having Alzheiner's disearse can be lessened or slowed if certain measures are put into place when the signs first become noticed.
Here are the most noted signs of Alzheimer's:
1. Memory loss: The loss of your memory is what most people think of when they hear the words Alzheimer's disease. There is good reason for this. Memory loss is often the first sign that something may not be quite right with your body.
2. Poor judgement: A person who has Alzheimer's disease may make poor decisions. Although everyone makes poor decisions at some point in their lives, the distinction here is that these are decisions that were previously so routine that they did not warrant a second thought.
3. Changes in mood: If you, or your loved one, is beginning to experience Alzheimer's disease, you may notice sudden, and often violent, mood changes. These mood swings are often quick and the person may cycle back and forth quite rapidly.
4. Changes in personality: If your mother was previously the life of the party and she suddenly becomes shy and withdrawn, it could be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. It is also worth noting if your previously shy and reserved father is suddenly sporting an overflowing social calendar.
5. Completing tasks: If a loved one seems to lose focus of tasks, they could have Alzheimer's disease. For example, if you get dressed to go get the mail in the rain but you leave the house without any type of footwear, this should be brought to the attention of your doctor.
6. Problems with language: Having a difficult time thinking of words that you previously used without any problems, or using words in odd or inappropriate ways, could be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. Your doctor will want to know about the fact tha you have any of these signs as the sooner treatment is started, then the better quality of life you will have.
