From a family military legacy to motorcycle enthusiast, the former Florida congressman has led a rich life. Here are eight facts about his personal life:

1. Military family

Both West's father and his older brother were career military officers. His father served in World War II. Later, his brother did a tour of duty in Vietnam.

West embraced his family's military heritage at an early age. He joined the Junior ROTC in high school and, after graduating from the University of Tennessee, entered the U.S. Army.

2. War record

West has the distinction of serving in not one, but two wars as part of the U.S. Army. He was deployed to Kuwait in 1991 to help free that country from an Iraqi invasion and then deployed to Iraq in 2003 to help overthrow Saddam Hussein as dictator.

3. Teacher and coach

West and his family relocated to Florida after he finished his military service. It was there his career took a new path. For a year, West taught U.S. history at Deerfield Beach High School. He also coached track and field at the school during that time.

4. Moving across the aisle

West made his name as an outspoken Republican. That was not always a part of his identity. Both of West's parents were registered Democrats when he was growing up, although West later characterized their views as conservative.

West picked up an appropriate hobby during his time living in Florida. He became a certified master scuba diver.

6. Married to an educator

West's wife, Angela, has some impressive accomplishments to her name. She graduated from Kansas State University with a Ph.D. in education. She later was appointed to serve on the board of trustees for Florida Atlantic University.

7. On the road

West has a passion for riding motorcycles. He is an honorary member of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.
