By    |   Tuesday, 13 January 2015 11:15 AM EST

Nashville is best known for its country music legends and current music scene. However, in addition to the fame of twang, the city also offers adventure destinations for travelers looking for something a bit more exciting.

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. Zipline tours: Adventureworks, which describes itself as "The recognized leader in teambuilding and outdoor adventure" offers aerial zip line tours that can last as long as 90 minutes. From a couples adventure and forest canopy tour to a haunted forest or full moon zip tour, those looking for adventure travel in Nashville will find not only excitement, but also team-building options at this destination.

2. Cumberland Caverns: This U.S. National Natural Landmark offers daily walking tours and for the more adventurous, spelunking trips. "With nothing but a flashlight and your own determination, you will proudly say 'I came, I caved, I conquered!'" Visitors with a sense of adventure and "a thrill-seeking condition" are encouraged to participate. Those with "heart or respiratory condition, knee or back problems" are not.

3. Wave Country: This travel adventure theme park offers water flumes, speed slides, and wave-action pools for the whole family. The park is listed as one of Nashville's top water parks and Nashville Life writes, "Don't miss the speed slides! Drop from a 40 foot tower and travel 80 feet!"

4. Canoe and kayaking adventures: In 2012, Nashville was named one of the Best River Towns in America by Outside magazine. "Decide if you want intense action, a wilderness experience, a reinvigorating getaway or a bouncy ride with your family. Our rivers and waterways have different personalities and distinct experiences to offer. Be warned: Full-on excitement is available and waiting in the water in Tennessee!" says the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development.

5. Treetop Adventure Park at Nashville Shores: This is another aerial zipline travel adventure for visitors looking for excitement. "The Treetop Adventure Park is an aerial adventure course set in the beautiful woods of Nashville Shores Lakeside Resort featuring 100 exciting and challenging obstacles including suspended bridges, 10 zip lines, cargo nets, ladders, Tarzan jumps, and many other thrilling elements."

6. Mountain biking adventures: "Tennessee is filled with great mountain biking trails for all skill levels. There are some smooth, fast, flowing trails, and for the more adventurous type, a few trails filled with rocks, roots, and drops," says Nashville Mountain Bike.
