Acne: Top Five Drugs that Work

Wednesday, 22 September 2010 10:28 AM EDT

When sebum, an oil secretion from the skin, collects along with bacteria and dead cells in the hair follicle or open skin pore, it results in acne. Effects of hormones on the pilosebaceous unit (that consists of the hair follicle and sebaceous gland) block the skin pore and allow follicular material to seep in through the skin.

Around 40 percent of people face the problem of acne. The market is flooded with acne fighting creams and other products, but few acne treatments work. Some effective treatments for acne include:

Acne Medication
  1. ProActiv has a whole range of acne-fighting products including face wash gel, lotion, toner, cleanser, and moisturizer. Prescription grade benzoyl peroxide is the active component of the product. ProActiv can be bought over the counter without a prescription.
  2. Accutane, a strong medication only available with a prescription, is another acne treatment that works. It is recommended for people who suffer from severe forms of acne. Side effects of Accutane may include liver dysfunction and cracked lips.
  3. Retino-a, a prescription drug, is considered a popular acne treatment that reduces scars, marks, and even discoloration of the skin.
Herbal Acne Treatments
Chemicals and synthetic medications are not the only way to cure acne. Tea Tree oil, olive oil, rosewood oil, clove oil, and lavender oil also help  treat mild acne. These oils are part of an herbal acne treatment. Herbal acne treatments can also include home remedies like applying orange peel or Aloe Vera gel on the face and affected areas.

One should try starting an acne treatment with herbal remedies. If these natural treatments don't provide results, a person can try prescription medications.

A few over-the-counter and prescription drugs for the treatment of moderate acne include:
  • Benzoyl Peroxide kills bacteria and reduces inflammation
  • Salicylic Acid reduces blackheads and whiteheads
  • Azelaic Acid  kills bacteria and reduces blackheads and whiteheads
Retinoids adapalene, tazarotene, and tretinoin can be used for severe acne.
