What Are the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice's Policy Goals?

By    |   Friday, 29 May 2015 11:41 AM EDT

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), was founded in 1973 under the original name of the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights.

It is a coalition formed from religious communities that holds policies supporting abortions, contraceptive measures, sex education, and religious liberty.

RCRC came into existence directly in the aftermath of the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that declared women had, under the 14th Amendment, the right to terminate their pregnancies under certain conditions.

According to the RCRC website, although its member organizations and supporters are “religiously and theologically diverse, they are unified in the commitment to preserve reproductive choice as a basic part of religious liberty, and to be a collective, religious voice for reproductive justice. For four decades, RCRC has been working where faith intersects with issues related to our reproductive lives.”

RCRC’s website lists four specific policy goals:

Urgent: How Do You Feel About Stronger Regulations on Abortion Clinics?

1. Abortion Care
RCRC declares that women have the unhindered right to plan their families, whether that means using contraceptive measures or having abortions, and thus should have access to quality and affordable care.

2. Contraception

Affordable access to contraception is deemed essential for social and reproductive justice in the RCRC. Its website further points out that 99 percent of Catholic and evangelical women are using or have used contraception in the past.

3. Sexuality Education

RCRC supports education pertaining to sexuality, precautionary contraceptive measures, and sexual tolerance for the LGBT community.

4. Religious Liberty
The RCRC claims that any efforts used to undermine any of the previous three policies are affronts against the religious freedom protected under the Constitution.
