The coup in Egypt and reports of an increasing presence of radical Islamists among Syria's rebel groups are playing into the hands of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been arguing for almost two years that the protest movement against him is illegitimate, foreign-based and made up primarily of Islamist terrorists.
