Pakistan will dissolve its parliament later this month and schedule general elections, setting up a contentious process with various political factions wrestling for control of the country. It will be the final exam for Pakistan – the ultimate test of whether the troubled Muslim nation can hold on to a representative form of government. If it devolves into a military dictatorship, Pakistan can be expected to cause trouble for the West, and its arch enemy India, for decades to come.
