ISLAMABAD (AP) — A defense lawyer says Pakistani authorities have set a date for the execution of a death row prisoner diagnosed with schizophrenia after the country's highest court rejected his final appeal.
Sara Bilal, a lawyer at Justice Project Pakistan, said Wednesday Nov. 2 was set as the date for the execution of Imdad Ali, unless Pakistan's president issues a pardon for him.
Under Pakistan's constitution, the president has authority to pardon any convicted person.
Ali has been on death row since he was convicted in 2001 in a murder case. The latest development came days after the country's Supreme Court ruled that schizophrenia does not qualify as a mental disorder under the Mental Health laws.
