A memorial of 20,000 flags was placed in front of the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Monday, to honor 200,000 Americans who died due to coronavirus, according to NBC News.
Johns Hopkins University reported the United States has recorded about 6.8 million coronavirus cases, including more than 200,000 deaths over the past six months.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., showed up to speak at the memorial Tuesday.
"It's just incomprehensible, the situation we find ourselves in," Pelosi said, saying the flags offer "some perspective on the number of lives that have been lost."
Before speaking at the memorial, Pelosi asked all House chamber staff members to stand for a moment of silence to honor the casualties of coronavirus.
