The Russian embassy on Tuesday sent a tweet that pointed out that the 1812 Overture by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a popular song played at Independence Day celebrations, is based on a Russian battle.
A link in the Tuesday tweet pointed to a Sputnik News story about the battle.
Tchaikovsky wrote the song in 1880 to honor Russia's 1812 victory over Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army in the Battle of Borodino. It was first performed in 1883 at the Christ the Savior’s Cathedral in Moscow.
