Sixty-six percent of Americans want President Donald Trump to agree to a budget without funding for a wall on the southern border, while 52 percent want Democrats to reach a deal on a budget that includes funding for the barrier, according to a CBS News poll released on Wednesday.

Additional data from the survey also showed stronger support for the Democratic position than for Trump’s stance.

  • Forty-three percent back the Democrats' refusal to fund a border wall, while 31 percent support Trump's refusal of any proposal that does not contain wall funding.
  • Only 28 percent said the border wall is worth the government shutdown, while 71 percent said it is not worth it.
  • Only 37 percent said a wall is necessary to secure the border, while 61 percent said the border can be secured without it.
  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is seen as doing a better job than Trump on handling the negotiations over the shutdown by a 47 percent to 35 percent margin.
  • Sixty percent of American said the government shutdown is causing serious problems, while 34 percent said it is causing some problems, but not serious ones and 5 percent said it is causing no problems.
  • Trump's overall approval rating has dropped three percentage points from November to 36 percent today. Fifty-nine percent of Americans now disapprove of the job he is doing, a high for his presidency.

The poll was conducted by telephone from January 18-21 among a random sample of 1,102 adults nationwide. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample is plus or minus three percentage points.
