More Americans are venturing out of their homes after several weeks of lockdown as coronavirus restrictions are relaxed, a new poll finds.
Results from the Gallup survey:
- 65% said they were avoiding public places during the week of May 11-17, a drop of 6 percentage points from the previous week. In mid-April, the figure was at 78%.
- 63% said they were avoiding small gatherings, down from 71% the previous week.
- 76% said they were steering clear of traveling by plane, bus, and subway, a drop from the previous week's number of 81%. That statistic was at 89% in mid-April.
In terms of specific places people are visiting, Gallup found:
- 21% went to a restaurant, compared to 13% the previous week.
- 23% went to another person's home, up from 19%.
- 30% went to their place of work, no change from the previous week.
- 47% went to the grocery store, a decrease from 49%.
- 16% went to the pharmacy, down from 17%.
- 25% went to another store not listed in the poll, up from 20%.
All states have begun to lift restrictions on staying at home and keeping businesses shuttered as leaders attempt to reopen the economy and get things moving again.
