A U.S. Marine was shot and killed at the main gate of the Camp Lejeune base in North Carolina on Tuesday when a sentry's rifle discharged, a base spokesman said, without elaborating on whether the shooting was intentional.

Marine Captain Joshua Smith said the incident was under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service but was not considered an act of terrorism or an active shooter event.

The Marine who was killed was not immediately identified by base officials, pending notification of next of kin.

Camp Lejeune, located outside Jacksonville, N.C., was founded in 1941 and is home to several Marine commands and one U.S. Navy command.
