Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a federal ban on assault weapons can coexist in America if the left and right would only meet in the middle.
In an appearance Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Schumer said the country is “at a tipping point.”
“I think we could be at a tipping point . . . a tipping point where we might actually get something done,” he said.
In addition to banning assault weapons in the United States, Schumer also proposes limiting the number of bullets per clip and addressing gun ownership among the mentally ill.
“The NRA and other groups even further to the right have engendered fear in the average gun owner,” Schumer said. “I think we need a new paradigmn.”
