Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez in Florida Thursday dealt a blow to the county's sanctuary status by ordering jails to comply with requests from the federal government on detaining illegal immigrants.
Within an hour, President Donald Trump praised the effort on Twitter:
Gimenez took the step amid fears of losing millions of dollars for defying immigration officials in light of executive orders President Donald Trump signed on Wednesday, The Miami Herald reports.
"In light of the provisions of the executive order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security," Gimenez wrote Daniel Junior, the interim director of Miami-Dade's corrections and rehabilitation department.
Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain illegal immigrant inmates since 2013 who are wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as the federal government does not fully reimburse the county for the expense, the Herald reports.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed Thursday to sue the Trump administration over the order.
