Eighty-three percent of Canadians say the border with the United States should remain closed for the time being due to the coronavirus, a new poll by DART & maru/BLUE reveals.

Seventeen percent say it is time for the border to reopen to non-commercial traffic.

Here is how the poll results, detailed by the National Post, break down:

  • 22% said they would be okay with border controls loosening if there were strict regulations on face masks and physical distancing.
  • 25% said the border should reopen “soon and carefully” with visitors receiving temperature checks.
  • 24% believe there should first be proof visitors are vaccinated against COVID-19 even though there is no vaccine at the present time.
  • 23% believe the border should be shut indefinitely to any visitor traffic between Canada and the United States.
  • 12% said they would actually cross the border once it reopens.

The poll, conducted May 13, surveyed 1,512 Canadians. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
