FairTax Minnesota continues to lobby for revamping the country’s tax system by replacing the income tax with a tax on consumption, the
Bemijdi Pioneer reports.
Rob Benson, the communications director for FairTax Minnesota, is
presenting his group’s ideas across the state. The consumption tax idea is backed by U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and U.S. Rep. Rob Woodhall, both Republicans of Georgia.
The proposed changes in the tax system would abolish all federal taxes on personal and corporate income, gifts, estate, capital gains, Social Security, Medicare and self-employment. All those taxes would be replaced by one simple federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing sales tax authorities in each state, according to FairTax Minnesota’ website.
The consumption tax would raise more money than the current system. And it would allow workers to keep their entire paycheck, the newspaper reported. The proposal has been supported in the past by Minnesota U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson.
