Public Policy Polling: Fewer Than 1 in 3 Dems Back Obama on Libya

Fewer than 1 in 3 Democrats support President Barack Obama’s military intervention in Libya, a new nationwide poll shows. Republicans and independents are even more opposed to the fight to support rebels fighting the country’s leader Moammar Gadhafi.

The Public Policy Polling survey showed that only 27 percent of Americans support the action, while 40 percent opposed and 33 percent had no opinion.

Even more worrying for the president is that, even among his core Democratic supporters, only 31 percent supported while 28 percent were against. Among Republicans, the figures were 21-51, and for independents, 29-42.

And he is not picking up votes either. Only 4 percent of GOP voters say Libya makes them more likely to cross party lines and support the President, while 14 percent of Democrats say the opposite.

The pollsters say: “There's a wide array of things causing Obama's popularity issue, and it would be a mistake to try to pin it all on Libya — but it's certainly not helping.”
