Amazon Prime Day Fails to Impress Shoppers, but Sales Still Skyrocket

Although Amazon’s Prime Day on Wednesday proved to be a dud for unimpressed shoppers, the company’s sales still shot up 80 percent by midday as customers continued to order a vast array of items, though still complaining all the while.

Despite the negativity, Amazon said that Wednesday’s “peak order rates” surpassed last year’s Black Friday sales, according to CNN Money.

“Prime members have bought tens of thousands of Fire TV Sticks, 35,000 "Lord of the Rings" Blu-ray sets, 28,000 Rubbermaid sets, and 4,000 Echos in 15 minutes,” said Amazon spokeswoman Lauren Englund in a statement, according to the Chicago Tribune. “The Kate Spade purse was gone in less than a minute.”

The sales were a “huge success,” according to Shmuli Goldberg, the marketing director for Feedvisor.com, a repricing company for Amazon sellers, according to the Chicago Tribune. The sales success is expected to draw new Prime members.

Although the sales skyrocketed, many shoppers took to social media to vent their frustration with Amazon’s “Lightning Deals” even though the products sold out within seconds, according to CNN Money. Amazon garnered more than 90,000 social media mentions by late Wednesday afternoon, the Tribune noted, although half of the sentiments expressed related to disappointment, citing the “majority of sales on less desirable items such as socks, microfiber towels, and Adam Sandler movies.”
