Pundits Take the Low Road on Egypt Crisis

When big news breaks, members of the media scramble in an effort to accomplish three objectives: get out in front of the story, make an accurate prediction about the outcome, and scavenge for provocative connections that no one else has made. Success on any one of these can thrust a pundit, columnist or media personality into the national spotlight.

Some are better at it than others. Charles Krauthammer somehow always finds a way to say what we're all thinking, but before we know we're thinking it, and with much better adjectives.

Bill Maher is a masterful archeologist — he always knows just where in a story to dig for that buried treasure of hypocrisy, irony or absurdity.
