Just having mild effects of coronavirus can leave lasting heart damage, according to a study from JAMA.
The researchers investigated the results of cardiac exams of 100 patients who recovered from coronavirus, and 28 were supplemented with oxygen to fight the virus. The overwhelming majority of patients had mild symptoms while the illness was present.
After their symptoms went away, 78 patients still had lingering cardiovascular damage, including 60 with "ongoing myocardial inflammation."
This damage seemed to be independent of pre-existing conditions or severity.
The study aligns with other research that shows coronavirus can have a lasting cardiovascular impact. In a study released in early July, 55% of patients had heart damage and one in seven had "heart abnormalities."
