Most men who have penis enlargement surgery wind up unhappy with the results, according to a new study from London.

Dr. Nim Christopher, a urologist at St Peter's Andrology Center in London questioned 42 men who had the surgery.

"For patients with psychological concern about the size of the penis -- particularly if it is normal size -- there is little point in offering them surgery because it makes no difference," said.

In general, Dr. Christopher found that the dissatisfaction rate was very high and that the men often wanted to have yet another enlargement procedure.

"The average increase in length is 1.3 cm (0.5 inches) which isn't very much and the dissatisfaction rate was in excess of 70 percent," he said.

Christopher noted that men are often set up for dissatisfaction with the surgery, by exaggerated publicity and spam e-mails advertising penis enlargement surgery that are inaccurate and give unrealistic expectations.

Rather than having surgery, Dr. Christopher and his colleagues, concluded that men who want the surgery should be referred for psychological counseling. The report appeared in the journal, European Urology.
