A stopgap spending bill will extend the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through Dec. 7, Roll Call is reporting.
VAWA was set to expire Sept. 30.
“Any program, authority or provision, including any pilot program, authorized under the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 shall continue in effect through the date specified,” according to the bill’s text.
Forty-six House Republicans had urged Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. to advance a reauthorization of VAWA before it expired.
“Since being signed into law in 1994, VAWA has helped to protect and support millions of Americans who have faced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking,” the lawmakers said in a letter to House leadership.
