President Donald Trump is supportive of "being tough on Russia" — and of legislative efforts on the issue, new White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sunday.

In an interview on ABC News' "This Week," Sanders said Trump wasn't happy with an earlier version of a bill aiming to punish Moscow for meddling in the 2016 presidential election and its military aggression in Ukraine and Syria.

The White House had objected to a key section of the bill that would mandate a congressional review if Trump attempted to ease or end the sanctions against Moscow.

"The administration is supportive of being tough on Russia," she said.

"The original piece of legislation was was poorly written. We were able to work with the House and Senate. The administration is happy with the ability to do that and make those changes that were necessary. We support where the legislation is now and will continue to work with the House and Senate…"

She also said Trump continues to be frustrated by information leaks – and pointed the finger of blame at the intelligence community.

"There's an issue that there are stories that are being leaked out of the intelligence community," she said. "We have had over 60 leaks in the first six months from the intelligence community, when the other administrations previous to us were in the single digits after the entire time.

"This is a real problem. People are putting our national security at risk."
