President Donald Trump formally nominated Christopher Wray to be the next FBI director, The Hill reported.

Trump made it official by sending Wray's nomination to the Senate. The president had previously announced his intention to pick Wray to fill the post vacated by the firing of James Comey, the website noted.

"I am honored and humbled to be nominated by the president to lead the FBI, the premier law enforcement organization in the world," Wray said in a statement released by the Justice Department.

Wray, 50, headed the Justice Department's Criminal Division from 2003-2005 during President George W. Bush's administration, the Washington Examiner reported.
