Billionaires Sheldon and Miriam Adelson in July sunk $25 million into Senate Republican coffers in the fight to maintain GOP control of the upper chamber in November's midterms, The Washington Post reported.

Their contribution to the Mitch McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund super PAC brings their total to $55 million for the year, marking them as the biggest donors to date, the Post reported.

Then Adelsons gave $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan, in May, the Post reported.

The FEC filings also showed the Republican National Committee with a record-breaking haul in July, with its $14-plus million doubling up the Democrats for the month.
