Sen. Rand Paul compared U.S. government borrowing to that of Venezuela in a tweet he sent out one day after the Senate passed President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill.
“New 1,000,000 bolivar note in Venezuela worth 53 cents. Will US be the next Venezuela with Congress borrowing over $6 trillion in one year?” wrote the Kentucky Republican, who is one of the most outspoken senators about government spending.
Sen. Mitt Romney also harshly criticized what he identified as excessive spending in the bill, which passed without any GOP support, Fox News reported.
"We’re going to be asking the American people to allow us to borrow money from China and others, pass that on to our kids and grandkids so that we can send money to states like California and mine that don’t need the money," the Utah Republican said. "That doesn’t make any sense at all."
Venezuela’s economy has deteriorated over the past number of years due to a long period of hyperinflation and a sharp drop in oil prices, as well as the coronavirus pandemic.
