New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer, who is in line to become his party's leader in the Senate, is ahead of largely unknown GOP challenger Wendy Long by almost 40 percentage points and enjoys high favorability rates among state voters, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

In the poll of 1,667 New York state voters taken between March 22-29:
  • Schumer, 63 percent;
  • Long, 24 percent;
  • Republicans: Long over Schumer, 59-26 percent;
  • Democrats: Schumer over Long, 89-2 percent;
  • Independents: Schumer over Long, 58-25 percent.
Schumer also received a 58-24 percent favorability rating from voters, who said they approve of the job he is doing by 62-25 percent. But with Long, 85 percent of the voters did not know enough about her to form an opinion.

The poll carried a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 points.
