Seventy-two percent of Americans say they saw at least “some” news about the election that seemed completely made-up, according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center.
Here are highlights of the poll released on Tuesday:
- 28% say they saw a lot of made-up news, 45% say they saw some, 20% say they didn’t see much, and 6% say they didn’t see any.
- 69% of Republicans say made-up news and information intended to mislead the public had a major impact on the election, compared to 54% of Democrats who said the same thing.
- 69% of Republicans say the made-up news was mostly intended to hurt their own party. 63% of Democrats say the made-up news was intended to hurt the Democratic Party.
- 67% of Republicans say made-up news had a major impact on people’s confidence in the accuracy of the election results. 60% of Democrats agreed.
The poll, conducted Nov. 18-29, surveyed 12,648 people. The margin of error is plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
