Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton became their party's nominee for president thanks to just 9 percent of Americans, according to a breakdown in
The New York Times.
According to the Times, 60 million eligible Americans voted in the primaries, about 30 million in each, with about half of those 60 million voting for candidates not named Trump or Clinton.
That leaves 9 percent, according to the Times, that voted for the pair, a result also seen in 2008.
According to the Times, Clinton and Trump will be courting the following groups in the general election:
- 30 million Americans who voted for someone else in the primary;
- 73 million eligible Americans who did not vote in the primaries;
- 88 million eligible Americans who do not vote at all.
