Ben Jealous, one of seven Democrats in Maryland's June 26 gubernatorial primary, got a boost from Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday as he called for free community college for state students.

"In Maryland we don’t have to crawl forward. We can leap forward,” Jealous told supporters at a community center in Prince George's County as he was flanked by Sanders who is campaigning for him, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Jealous also released a plan that would eventually make public colleges and universities free for Maryland state students. Tuition would be paid for by increasing the taxes of the wealthy and on cigarettes.

He is also proposing free college tuition for "in-demand professions" such as nurses, public school teachers and construction engineers.
