President Donald Trump's no-nonsense, in-your-face style of negotiating might be what North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un understands best as the two world leaders enter historic anti-nuclear and trade negotiations this week, Simon Jenkins, a columnist for The Guardian, writes in Monday's editions.
"The one virtue of Trump's diplomatic style is blatancy," Jenkins wrote. "It turns its back on politesse. It is loud, personal, real, and leaves little scope for misunderstanding. Just conceivably it could be the one diplomacy that Kim understands.
"[I]f he pulls it off, he will have secured a real coup. He could justly claim that his methods have made the world a safer place. It will be back to the drawing board for traditional diplomacy."
The summit in Singapore is the first between a sitting American president and the leader of North Korea.
