Ohio Gov. John Kasich said last week's second GOP presidential debate on CNN was like a "demolition derby."

"I was just trying not to crash my car," Kasich said during an appearance on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers."

Kasich — who avoided the debate's wild back and forth among some of the candidates like Donald Trump and Jeb Bush — told Meyers he wants to be a "uniter" and steer clear of "outrageous" statements.

"I'm not going to go out and say outrageous things and promises that I can't I keep to win," Kasich said.

"Because if I did that, I'd be violating my own principles and if I lost by not being myself, I'll never forgive myself.

"If I don't win, and I'm still being positive with good ideas and trying to bring people together and give people a sense of hope and purpose, then I will be a winner regardless of what happens."
