A strong economy is not enough to get President Donald Trump re-elected — he needs to have "a second act in him," GOP strategist and commentator Karl Rove said Thursday.

In an interview on Fox News' "The Daily Briefing," Rove said Trump "can't rest" on good economic numbers.

"There'll be a tendency . . . for any White House to say . . . 'We got the big thing done," Rove said. But it's not enough to say "we've done a good job — give us a second term," he insisted.

"You have to disqualify your opponent, or more importantly, say 'I've got a second act,'" he said.

Rove said he has seen signs the Trump administration is thinking along those lines as well, including by examining plans to address prescription drug prices and student loans.

"Clearly someone is thinking about 'what do we need to do . . . after we get out of this impeachment bubble,'" he said, adding it is encouraging to see "evidence they're thinking along these lines."

"When [incumbents] don't have a second act in them, they get defeated," he said.
