Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole will stump for Sen. Pat Roberts next week, looking to give the Republican incumbent, who just survived a tough primary battle, a boost in his equally challenging general election fight.
"The battleground for control of the Senate is now Kansas," Dole, 91,
told ABC News. "I think Roberts is going to win."
Dole plans to appear with Roberts at town hall-style events in Dodge City, Kinsley, and Greenburg,
reports Politico.
Dole, who entered Congress in 1961 in the House, was the longest-serving GOP leader when he retired from the Senate in 1996.
Another high-profile Republican, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, is scheduled to pitch in for Roberts as well, Politico says.
Roberts, 78, who has served three terms in the Senate, faces independent Greg Orman in November.
Orman, a 45-year-old businessman, has been leading in the polls, but Roberts lost more ground when the Democrat in the race recently dropped out.
