The race between Republican Sen. David Perdue and his Democrat challenger Jon Ossoff for the Georgia Senate runoff is at a virtual tie, according to a recently released Insider Advantage/Fox5 Atlanta poll.

In the survey, 49% supported Perdue, 47.8% backed Ossoff, and 3.2% were undecided, with early voting already underway for the Jan. 5 election.

If Democrats win both of the special Georgia Senate election races, they will have 50 Senate seats and control the chamber due to Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote as vice president in a Joe Biden administration.

Other results from the survey:

  • Perdue is strongest among those who are 65 years or older with 56.4%, while Ossoff only has the support of 42.9% in that age group.
  • Ossoff is performing best among those voters under the age of 30, with 48.7%, while Perdue has the backing of 40.5% in that age group.
  • Among whites, Perdue holds a significant 68.4% to 28.8% advantage, while Ossoff has a commanding 79.6% to 16.7% lead among Blacks.
  • Perdue has a large lead among men with 53.2%, while Ossoff only has 41.1%. Among women, the advantage is clearly with Ossoff at 54.6%, while Perdue is at 45.3%.
  • While both candidates have the overriding backing of those in their own party, Ossoff holds a significant 55.7% to 31.4% lead over Perdue among independents.

The survey was conducted among 500 Georgia voters and has a margin of error of 4.4%.
