A legal defense fund set up to help ousted FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe will stop accepting contributions on Monday evening.

"As of 7 p.m. ET on April 2, the Andrew McCabe Legal Fund will cease accepting donations on GoFundMe," a notice said on the page set up for contributions.

"The funds generated will in the very near future be transferred to a more formal legal defense trust."

News of the plan to stop accepting donations was detailed in a report by The Hill.

It came after the defense fund had raised over $535,000.

McCabe had said the fund became necessary in order for him to "take a stand against the unfair way I have been treated."

The original goal of the defense fund was to raise $150,000, which it easily surpassed. It then exceeded its revised target of $250,000.

McCabe was fired on March 16 by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had cited "an unauthorized disclosure to the news media" and a lack of "candor" with Justice Department investigators.

McCabe's tenure came to an end just two days before his retirement.
