Ben Carson took a more deferential tone on Thursday after stoking the fires a day earlier by implying his own Christian faith was deeper than that of his GOP presidential rival Donald Trump.

Appearing on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" on Thursday, Carson said whether Trump is a man of faith as he claims "is something that should be apparent to people."

Carson said it isn't his nature to "get into the mud pit."

"You say the agents of divisiveness are hurting the country," host Bill O'Reilly said. "Is Donald Trump an agent of divisiveness?"

"Well, I would just say I don't judge for the people," Carson replied. "I just want to say … I believe what we have to do is extend to the people what a divisive person is and let them decide."
