The U.S. government may be just days away from a shutdown that could potentially force millions of federal employees to work temporarily without pay and suspend numerous "nonessential" federal functions.

Under the Antideficiency Act, federal agencies can't spend or commit any money without receiving appropriation or approval from Congress. That means a shutdown is bound to happen if Congress fails to pass the dozen appropriations bills that fund the government.
