Amid high unemployment and an unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants pouring across the border, President Joe Biden allowed a pandemic-prompted visa ban for certain foreign workers to expire – causing concern the move will upend the overly competitive job market looming over out-of-work Americans.

A moratorium on several types of visas was included in a series of June 2020 executive orders related to combating the pandemic that were issued by then-President Donald Trump. He called some of the non-immigrant visa programs, such as the H1-B visa for foreign workers, an "unusual threat to the employment of American workers."
