China’s supposed ace-in-the-hole in its trade war with the US — its threat to cut off supplies of the rare-earth metals used in high-tech products laptops, smart phones, and advanced weaponry — may not be the trump card its leaders were hoping for.
In part, that's because rare-earth metals really aren’t that rare. In fact, the U.S. Geological Survey describes them as “moderately abundant.”
