Whether Democrats can keep their most radical members from hijacking the party brand and driving it too far to the left in the run-up to 2020 may well determine whether the next president has an “R” or a “D” after his name, analysts say.

Many pundits thought the weak economic recovery and low job-approval numbers would doom then-President Obama’s chances for reelection in 2012. But Democrats had a surprise in store for GOP standard-bearer Mitt Romney.
