In January and February, the British government was understandably reluctant to lockdown the entire nation to fight a virus.

Perhaps, officials thought, it would be better to protect the aged and immune-compromised, and let the coronavirus run its course through the rest of society. Then, as natural immunity arose in the population, the virus would naturally fade away.
