When London police finally arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in April, Kremlin officials complained it violated “ideals of media freedom and integrity” -- this from a country where opponents of Vladimir Putin have notoriously short lifespans.

When Assange launched his site in 2006, he declared: “Our primary targets are those highly oppressive regimes in China, Russia, and Central Eurasia.” The United States mentioned only as an afterthought.
