Midterm Warning Signs GOP Could Lose Its Grip on 'Solid South'

After decades of Republican dominance south of the Mason-Dixon line, this year’s midterm election cycle suggests the GOP may now be in danger of losing its firm hold on the solid South.

Consider: Virginia has already shifted from red to purple to blue. In Alabama for the first time in over a quarter century, voters last year elected a Democrat -- Doug Jones -- to the U.S. Senate. Even Texas appeared to be trending purple for a while this cycle, with Democratic challenger Rep. Beto O’Rourke giving Sen. Ted Cruz all he could handle and more.
