In a Senate that is as closely and bitterly divided as the nation itself, just five senators' votes are expected to determine whether embattled federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh is elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court, or suffers a brutal heave-ho.

Red-state Democrats Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri have signaled they’ll give the Kavanaugh nomination a thumbs down, and GOP Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee says he’ll approve the nomination. This sets the stage for the final five senators, three of whom are women. If all Senate Democrats vote along party lines, Republicans can only afford to lose one vote or Kavanaugh’s nomination be rejected.
